Hall of the Mountain King Demo: Smashed Blocks and Whirling Wilds
Hall of the Mountain King takes its name and its music from Edvard Grieg's piece and sets a troll king's cave on 5x3 reels with 20 lines. Wilds on the screen light a multiplier meter, x1 to x5 in the base game and up to x15 in a Free Spins Bonus that climbs through three stages. Quickspin released it in May 2019, publishes a single model at 96.29% and rates volatility 5 of 5.
How does the Free Spins Bonus move from stage one to stage three?
A column of five blocks stands right of the reels in stages one and two. Each spin lights the next block up, and a win, or reaching the top, makes the Troll King smash the lit block. In stage one a smashed block swaps a card symbol (10, J, Q, K, then the A on top) for stacks of a troll; in stage two it adds Whirling Wilds, 6 at most. Smashing the top block opens the next stage. Stage three lasts three spins, and the collected Whirling Wilds drop onto the reels as Wilds.

Each Wild lights one more step of the meter
Every win on a spin is multiplied by the highest step the Wilds have lit: one Wild leaves it at x1, two make it x2, and five reach x5. The Wild also tops the paytable, €40.00 for five on a line at €1.00, level with the Troll King.

A single Wild turned up 147 times in our 500 spins, a pair 60 times and three Wilds 15 times; four or five never came. Wins paid at x2 and x3 brought back €333.00, against €79.00 from everything paid at x1.
Three hammers on the middle reels start a bonus of no fixed length
Every hammer Scatter in our log fell on reel 2, 3 or 4. One showed on 191 screens, two on 47 and three on 3, and each of those three screens started a bonus. Scatters pay nothing by themselves.

Neither the help screens nor Quickspin's page and sheet give a number of free spins; the length depends on the blocks. Our logged bonuses ran 17, 15 and 14 spins and the filmed one 18; the last three are always stage three.
A lit block climbs the column until a win brings the hammer down
The light went back to the bottom after every smash in our log, so only a run of losing spins carries it to the top and closes the stage.

Each stage-one block takes a card symbol off the reels and fills its places with stacks of a troll: 10 becomes the blue troll in goggles, J the green spear troll, Q the purple-haired troll woman, K the red-haired one, and A, the top block, the Troll King.

Our filmed stage one swapped the J and the K on winning spins before the light reached the A. Across the three logged bonuses the column removed three, three and two card symbols, the A among them every time.
Whirling Wilds wait above the reels for the last three spins
Stage two fills the column with Whirling Wild blocks, four holding one and a top block holding two, which makes the cap of 6. Collected Wilds hover above the reels and drop into random positions in stage three. At random the king also breaks the bottom block of the multiplier meter, lifting every step by one.

That left our filmed meter at x2 to x6. Three spins earlier, with the J already turned into green spear trolls, one stage-two spin had paid €23.00 at x1.

Stage three dropped one, one and two Whirling Wilds and added €9.75, and the round closed at €40.50, 40.5x the bet, after 18 free spins.
In the best logged bonus, on spin 59, stage three made €32.25 of €38.50, with three Whirling Wilds on a meter raised twice.
A base spin that nearly matched the best bonus
The 500 paid spins we logged at €1.00 on 27 Oct 2026 returned 91.2%, and 25% of them paid.
- 500paid demo spins at €1.00
- 25%of them paid something
- 38.5xbest spin, free spins round included
- 3free spins bonuses triggered
Base-game wins made €412.00 of the €456.25 that came back. The three bonuses added €44.25: spin 59 paid 38.5x, 145 paid 3.75x and 275 paid 2x. The balance bottomed out at €4,952.00 on spin 439, and spin 440 answered with 36.75x: Troll King, Wild, Wild, Troll King along the middle row for €22.50 at x3, plus six smaller lines.
The 2019 sheet's base and bonus shares do not add up to its 96.29% total, so we leave them out. Its 100x win comes once in 907 spins, and none of ours got there.
Polar Paws multiplies with special Wilds, the king counts ordinary ones
Polar Paws came out in December 2019 with Multiplier Wilds up to x4, a volatility rating of 3.56 and 819x as its largest simulated win. Prime Zone, from July 2019, rates 3, and both expect 100x once in about 1,490 spins, against 907 here.
Of the games on this site released before 2020, only Sakura Fortune has shorter odds of a 100x win, and Hall of the Mountain King is one of 13 games here with the top volatility rating of 5.
The bonus swings: two of our four paid under 5x and two near 40x, and each time stage three was only as strong as what the first two stages left it. In the base game, the money came on spins with two or three Wilds.
Answers drawn from four bonuses and the help screens
The four bonuses are the three in our 500-spin log and the one we filmed.
Is there a fixed number of free spins?
No. Stages one and two end only when the lit block reaches the top of the column, and every win sends the light back to the bottom, so their length varies. Stage three is always three spins. Our four bonuses ran 14, 15, 17 and 18 spins.
Does the meter keep working during the free spins?
Yes, and it can grow there. Once the bottom block is smashed, one Wild already gives x2 instead of x1, and each further smash lifts every step again, to x15 at most. In our filmed bonus one upgrade made it x2 to x6, and two Wilds paid the last spin at x3.
Is the top simulated win a cap?
It is not. The demo server's simulation of 100 billion spins found 8,084.25x as its largest win; Quickspin's 2019 game sheet prints 7,326x from 200 billion spins, and the game page speaks of more than 7,000x your bet.
Are three hammers the only way into the bonus?
They are. Quickspin's page and sheet show no buy, the demo server lists no purchase and the client has no buy button, so the bonus needs three Bonus Scatters in one spin. In our log they always fell on reels 2, 3 and 4.
Could a casino run a lower RTP version?
Not on record. Quickspin's sheet lists a single model, 96.29%, and the demo server agrees, so unlike several newer Quickspin slots reviewed here, this one has no documented 94% or lower version.
